About EFPM
Promoting ethics, respect and solidarity through sport
1. Introduction
The European Fair Play Movement (EFPM) is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation founded in 1994 in Zurich (Switzerland) under the auspices of FIFA House.
Its founding assembly brought together representatives from 14 European countries, united by a shared belief that sport can be a driver of ethics, respect, and peace across the continent.
2. Mission & Aims
EFPM’s mission is to promote Fair Play and Tolerance in the broadest sense — both in sport and in everyday life.
The Movement seeks to achieve this by:
- Supporting its members in developing Fair Play initiatives.
- Encouraging cooperation between European sports organisations and public authorities.
- Promoting education and awareness around ethics, respect, and solidarity.
- Recognising and rewarding individuals and institutions who exemplify Fair Play values.
3. History & Facts
For five years prior to its foundation, European delegates exchanged ideas and shared experiences on Fair Play campaigns in their countries.
Recognising the need for a European body dedicated to Fair Play, they created EFPM during the Founding Assembly held on May 27–28, 1994, at FIFA House (Zurich, Switzerland).
Since 2013, the EFPM headquarters have been located at the ASKÖ offices in Vienna (Austria), and in 2021 the operational base moved to Brussels, reinforcing EFPM’s role at the heart of European sport and civil society.
4. Governance & Members
The EFPM is governed by a General Assembly, held annually, and an Executive Committee of nine members, elected for a four-year term.
All members of the Executive Committee serve on a voluntary basis, reflecting the organisation’s spirit of commitment and integrity.
EFPM currently gathers more than 30 member organisations across Europe — including National Fair Play Committees, National Olympic Committees, and European sport federations.
Through its members and partners, EFPM cooperates with over 600 national, regional, and continental sport, educational and media organisations.
