2014 EUROPEAN FAIR PLAY DIPLOMA (Individuals)VIT AUERMUELLER and ANTONIN BELIK(CZE)

Vít Auermueller and Antonín Bělík are Czech mountain climbers who received a Fair Play award for their humanitarian actions during a 2012 expedition on Broad Peak (8047 m) in Pakistan. Rather than continuing their own attempt to reach the summit, they abandoned their climb to rescue a fellow climber from Taiwan who had fallen and was seriously injured far off the normal route, helping him down the steep, icy slopes to safety.

Their selfless decision to prioritize another climber’s life over their personal goal of summiting the mountain exemplifies the spirit of Fair Play and solidarity in sport.
