World Fair Play Day: “Become a Fair Play Hero” Workshop Inspires Children in Šahy, Slovakia
On 21 May, a workshop entitled “Become a Fair Play Hero” took place in Šahy (SVK) with the participation of children from local schools. The event was organised in connection with World Fair Play Day, proclaimed by a resolution of the United Nations (UN). The celebrations had already begun the previous day with the ceremonial presentation of awards by the Fair Play Club of the Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee (SOŠV) to individuals whose actions, attitudes, and life examples inspire others towards responsible and fair behaviour.
The workshop symbolically highlighted the importance of fair play as a universal value that unites people regardless of age or sporting achievements.
The meeting was led by three-time Olympian, World Championship silver medallist in fencing, and Chairwoman of the SOŠV Fair Play Club, Katarína Ráczová. Several distinguished personalities from Slovak sport also attended the event. Their presence gave the workshop exceptional significance and served as a source of inspiration for the young participants.
Among the guests were Paralympian of the Decade and five-time Paralympic Games medallist in table tennis Ladislav Gáspár, Olympian and World Championship silver medallist in handball Janka Stašová, honorary member of the SOŠV Vladimír Miller, who served in various roles at 11 editions of the Olympic Games, and radio journalist Peter Buček, who attended several editions of both the Olympic and Paralympic Games as a reporter.
The programme included various interactive games and activities through which the children experienced practical situations focused on fair play behaviour. The activities were designed to help them understand how dishonest behaviour by an opponent can influence the course of a game, the atmosphere within a team, and the overall sporting experience.
During the workshop, the children learned about the importance of teamwork, respect for rules, and respect for other players. The programme was conducted interactively, encouraging participants to actively engage in discussions, ask questions, and share their own experiences from sporting activities.
The workshop provided the children not only with new knowledge, but also with many positive experiences and valuable lessons for everyday life.
