2024 EUROPEAN FAIR PLAY MOVEMENT “FAIR PLAY FLAME” DIPLOMA (to an athlete or a team under 18) goes to IVANO MOČIĆ (CRO)

Ivano, a student at Osnovna škola Brodarica, has a remarkable story that highlights his deep love for chess and his exceptional character. Ivano’s passion for chess began during a challenging period in his life. As a young boy, he spent nearly four years in various hospitals, battling illness. During this time, chess became more than just a game for Ivano; it was a window to the world, a source of joy, and a profound love that sustained him through his difficult journey. This early bond with chess has continued to grow, and today, Ivano is not only an outstanding player, but also an inspiring figure in every competition he participates in. According to Mr. Piacun, a member of the Technical Committee in the CSSF, Ivano is regarded as one of the promising talents in the Croatian chess community. His future is seen with high hopes and expectations of achieving exceptional results. As the captain of his team, Ivano exemplifies leadership, positivity, and infectious enthusiasm. He is always cheerful, spreading joy and motivation not just among his teammates, but also among all participants at the tournament. Ivano was awarded the Fair Play Card not merely for his exceptional chess skills, which he diligently hones every day, but for his ability to share his love and positivity with everyone he encounters. This sentiment is echoed by Mr. Karagić, who highlights Ivano’s journey through nearly four years of hospital stays, where chess was his great passion alongside the love from his parents and friends. Today, Ivano’s accomplishments in chess serve as a beacon of hope for other boys facing rocky paths in childhood, demonstrating how one can grow with the principles of goodness. Ivano’s inspiring story and character were presented at the National Chess School Sport Championship where he was awarded the Fair Play Card, and was met with thunderous applause and even a few tears, underscoring the profound impact he has on those around him. His presence affirms that chess is indeed an inspirational sport and a great love for many young people. As Mr. Karagić aptly puts it, “we adults can learn from the young,” a statement that resonates with all fair play card recipients at our national championships.
